Dwarf Jewel Cichlids

Hemichromis cristatus.

There are two dwarf jewels in the aquarium hobby that we have had -- H. cristatus, and H. bangui. Neither grow very large and both males and females possess amazing red coloration. The cristatus appear to have slightly smaller side spots and both have similar behavior -- that is to keep them only with other agressive fish. They only get about 2 inches long and can be bright red even when not breeding although they can turn off the red immediately when I put a net in the tank or try to move them to a photo tank to take a picture. We presently have only the H. cristatus.
